  16. bass was embarking on a career in law when the King of Bulgaria
  17. heard him in concert and asked a question no one would ever
  18. have to ask again: "Why are you not a singer?" Christoff combined
  19. a Russian-style vocal richness with an Italian musical refinement;
  20. these qualities, along with a fiery acting style and the breadth
  21. of his repertoire, made him one of the greatest basses of this
  22. century.
